Heart & Soul Drum Academy
Heart and Soul Drum Academy is an educational non-profit organization in the Rondo Community of St. Paul, Minnesota offering Djembe hand drum classes to youth ages 3-17. We use the Djembe hand drum to teach them about communication as well as musical creativity. Musical arts are no longer available in many public-school systems. Providing community Djembe classes in drum circles is a way to help youth focus on a task; listen to what others contribute to the drum circle; and work together for one purpose – a song. Some drummers are the steady bass beat, others play the various ranges of tone, and the rhythmic makers accent the beats by slapping the drum, to bring the bass, tone and slap together for a syncopated rhythm of harmonies.

These experiences have led them to understand that a successful and fulfilling dance experience is helped not only by the relationship between teacher and student, but between teacher, student and parent. Shinparam is a Korean traditional drum troupe which was founded in 2004 and is cosponsored by Korean Quarterly newspaper. Shinparam performs at various Korean American and Asian American events around the Twin Cities, annually at the Chicago Korean Street Festival, and we have, on occasion, trained in South Korea at the Hanullim School of Music in Buyeo. Twin Cities Chinese Dance Theater
Established in 2002, the Twin Cities Chinese Dance Center (“TCCDC”) is a non-profit performing arts and educational organization founded with the goal of promoting the understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture. Their activities are designed to preserve traditional Chinese genres of performing arts and nurture innovations that reflect the dynamic and diverse Chinese cultural heritage. Programs fuse contemporary performing arts with traditional Chinese performance styles. The objective is to take audiences beyond cultural boundaries to where tradition meets innovation and creative freedom arises from discipline in the technical aspects of Chinese performing arts. Through teaching, performing Chinese traditional dance, and entering into competitive events, TCCDC has educated and inspired students and audiences for nearly a decade. TCCDC offers a comprehensive curriculum. We offer classes that focus on traditional Chinese dance movements and the historic cultural background of these movements. Chinese dance has its own unique vocabulary, meanings, and ordered structure that enables a dancer to fully express his or her thoughts and feelings with ease, grace and technical acumen. To reach this high level of performance, TCCDC students are trained by professional instructors that are also performers and therefore have a deep comprehension of both the technical and physical aspects of Chinese dance, as well as of the Chinese culture that is the basis for the dance steps. To satisfy broader interest of our students and parents, we also offer specially designed courses such as Latin, ballet, and Chinese martial arts.
